Puertorrican bomba dance is a traditional dance that originated on the island of Puerto Rico during the 17th century. It mixes African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences with a solid African rhythm. Bomba is a three-part music form that consists of drumming, singing, and dancing. The dancers engage in a call-and-response dialogue with the percussionists. The Bomba skirt is an essential element of the Bomba dance. It provides visual feedback to the musicians, allowing them to adjust the tempo or intensity of their playing based on the dancer’s movements. Elio’s movements are electric, and he has an uncanny ability to convey the emotions of joy, passion, and freedom through his dance.
